Music therapy
Music Therapy is a young but well established and respected profession in Canada. Music carries an innate healing power and Music Therapists are well trained to use music and its elements to effectively treat clients of all ages, abilities and ailments. The Canadian Music Therapy Association states that Music Therapy ...
" ... is the skillful use of music and its elements by an accredited music therapist to promote, maintain and restore mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health. Music has non-verbal, creative, structural and emotional qualities. These are used in the therapeutic relationship to facilitate contact me, interaction, self awareness, learning, self expression, communication and personal development.
but Dr. Johanne Brodeur of the Victoria Conservatory Children's Music Therapy Program explains it this way:
" Music has such a strong presence in people's lives, no wonder that using music as therapy can have such a powerful impact. Music facilitates expression and learning, instills respect and pride, provides wellness, gives courage and offers pure abandon. It is indeed a little bit like magic."
I believe that music has unlimited power to connect with and help the healing journey of any person regardless of culture, language or ability. Music opens our spirit and connects us with our emotions and creates community with others. As a singer, I believe that singing allows us to make our voice heard in a peaceful way that allows hearts to hear. Singing shares our heart and tells our story and the more we learn about each other, the more potential there is for understanding and peace in the world.
I created Heart Song Music Services in 2004 to share the power of music and use my skills and gifts to help heal. I have worked with youth at risk, people with disabilities and seniors in care, but my passion is Palliative Care and Cancer Care. I spent several years working in the Vernon Hospice House, a beautiful facility with amazing staff. I currently work under CMTS Services, with a wide range of populations. I am also training under Dr. Diane Austin, developing my skills in Vocal Psychotherapy to work with adults and trauma. If you would like more information about my work, please email me.
